„Ich bin Juden Dichtar“: This is how Mati Shemoelof’s first poem in „broken german“ begins and we suddenly feel that this is a poetic program not only of his first bilangual poetry book „Bagdad. Haifa. Berlin“ but also of his living and writing since the Israeli poet, writer and activist has moved to Berlin, six years ago. Mati and I have met shortly after and I’ve always been impressed by his great artistic spirit, his family history, his engagement in bridge building between the cultures. With his mizrachi, oriental jewish background (his grandparents coming from Iraq and Syria) he raised his voice as a citizen of Haifa in the innerjewish debate of Israel. Now living in Kreuzberg, together with his german wife (a real Berliner!) and their little daughter, Mati discovers new aspects of his jewish identity. At the same time he has established an artistic dialogue between the middle eastern community in Berlin, writers, musicians, artists from Israel, Iran, Syria and many other places who perform their art at the „Poetic Hafla“. In our conversation I wanted to listen to Mati Shemoelof’s story and, of course, to his poetry.
